One of the pleasures of reviewing downloadable content is that the game itself is a known quantity. With no need to spend time on important, but not particularly interesting, nuts-and-bolts elements such as graphics and control, we're free to consider the game as an experience and as a narrative.

Unlike the original game, which offered a cut-and-dried alternate ending for your download pleasure, these levels occupy a strange and confusing place in the story, with characters killed at the end of the game now brought back to life, and objectives once completed still to be tackled. They're classed as Chapters 8 and 9, and take up residence at the end of the level select menu, yet seem to take place somewhere between the hospital stage (Chapter 4) and the shopping mall (Chapter 5).

There's nothing in-game or in the pre-download text to explain what the heck is going on. This is crude, cut-and-paste storytelling, not helped by the fact that the story was hardly streamlined to begin with, and for those who care about such fanciful notions as context and purpose it makes for an annoyingly fragmented re-introduction to the world of Salem and Rios.

Sadly, the same dearth of imagination that ensured the full game never became more than "quite good" eats away at the design and pacing here, with little inspiration in the locations or what happens within them. Tromp down the corridor. Dive into cover. Distract. Flank. Snipe. It's literally more of the same, which would be fine for a game that had already proved its worth, but for a rough diamond like The 40th Day you'd be forgiven for wanting a little more polish after the fact.

Army of TWO: The 40th Day is the sequel to Army of TWO. The 40th Day focuses on two-player cooperative play and employs a cover system. It features Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem, the two protagonists from the original game, as combatant partners who, with the assistance of their handler Alice Murray, must fight to survive and prevail over invading forces that have engulfed Shanghai, China in a devastating terrorist attack. A sequel to The 40th Day, entitled Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel, was released on March 26, 2013.

Hey Darko, I don't know the circumstances surrounding why the game and DLC were delisted beyond the server shutdown. I find it strange the DLC for the first Army of Two game was eventually relisted, albeit only via the Xbox One marketplace. The servers for that game were shut down years ago yet we can still purchase that game and the DLC? Regarding The 40th Day, it's totally understandable if it's due to some licensing issue; it happens to the best of games and it's probably not feasible to renegotiate for an older title that isn't BC on the Xbox One/Series. That being said, it would be awesome if the team could find a way to at least make the DLC available in some capacity. Us achievement hunters would sure appreciate it.

We've seen some interesting approaches in the past that worked well. In a rare move of generosity, Activision added the DLC for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 as part of the digital game file for those who owned them on the Xbox 360. That approach may not be the best for The 40th Day as having the DLC installed can break other achievements until players have reached specific milestones in the base game, but it's just an example. Others have faced expired licenses that required a game to be delisted, but they were able to change the cost of the DLC to "free". I assume that would require approval from the license holders, but they may be amenable to this approach as nobody was profiting from giving the DLC away. When the Xbox team was forced to delist the Minecraft Story Mode games they were able to relist the episode purchases by "selling" them at an impossibly high price, but allowed those with the season pass or physical copies to claim every episode. Some companies even had the ability to generate redemption codes for their delisted content and could provide it to anyone who contacted their customer support. Wild, but I dig it!

I wish to comment on Janet Ingber's article, Happy 40th Birthday to Apple: A Look Back at Apple's Progress, appearing in the June 2016 issue. I love this article. I remember reading a lot of those facts in Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs, which I downloaded from BARD recently. I remember being less than enthused about switching from Windows to a Mac computer when my parents approached me about it a few years ago. I was very used to the way Microsoft did things, and I had been reading nothing but negativity about VoiceOver. But all this changed on December 27 of 2013 when my parents, a sister, and I walked into our local Apple store. After some hands-on experience, my parents bought me a 13-inch MacBook Air. At first I was a bit unsure about everything, but once I finally got the lay of the land I became hooked. I am now running the latest build of OS X El Capitan, and have found VoiceOver to be a great screen reader. What's more, I really like the direction in which Tim Cook has taken the company. His emphasis on universal accessibility rather than the company's ROI is very refreshing. I can't comment on Steve Jobs' leadership other than what I read in his bio, since I didn't have my Mac back then.

Thanks to IGN, we have a list of the games that are going to lose their servers and this strategy will be stretched out over the next three months, so there's no need to panic too much. On Thursday, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel and Dragon Age: Origins (Multiplayer Screenshots Server) will be shut down. 2ff7e9595c
